The chain gives the work its title and everything in the painting is linked to the Fairfield Shipyard in Govan, Glasgow. The crane at the top was built in 1911 and demolished in 2007 to make way for yard development. On the left is John Elder, who founded the yard on the grounds of the Fairfield Farm in 1864. He was an engineer, hence the flywheel below him. On the right is Elder's successor Sir William Pearce who came up with the idea of the 'Atlantic Blue Riband' in 1879 as there had been demand for Atlantic crossings. He financed and built the first ship, 'Arizona'. The artist calls the unit on the right, 'Feathers of Steel'. The structure in the centre is there for compositional purposes.
