Thomas Scott was the second son of John Scott of Malleny in Midlothian; he was created lieutenant-general on 4 June 1813 and obtained the rank of general on 22 July 1830. He served in the American War of Independence (1775–1783); Flanders 1793 and the Fourth Mysore War (1799), including the fall of Seringapatam. On return home he was captured by a French privateer but eventually made it back home to Scotland.
