The oldest construction in Leyland (source: South Ribble Borough Council Conservation Area Appraisal and Management Plan, revised February 2014). It features a base of two square steps, and an all-tapered shaft incorporating part of the original octagonal shaft, surmounted by cross. Another two steps lie hidden beneath the ground level (according to www.lancashirepast.com). The cross itself was broken down during Puritan times. Two gas lamps were attached to the top of the shaft in the nineteenth century, until the cross was restored for Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee in 1887, to the design of Charles Deacon, Architect of Liverpool, and funded by Rev. Thomas Rigby Baldwin, Vicar of St Andrew's Parish Church, Leyland, 1852–1891, and Miss Susannah Maria Farington (1809–1894) of Worden Hall, Leyland.
