'Landscape Head' is dated February 1950 when Wells worked as a studio assistant to Barbara Hepworth in St Ives. At this time Wells made a number of paintings in which figures merge with the landscape. This image is closely related to another painting Wells made in 1949 entitled 'Head Landscape'.

Wells, a doctor on the Isles of Scilly during the War, was encouraged to become a practising artist by Barbara Hepworth, Ben Nicholson and Naum Gabo – key figures in British Constructivism then living in Carbis Bay, Cornwall.
