This marble bust of a woman has been identified as Lady Elizabeth Murray, née Finch, 1st Countess of Mansfield, wife of Lord Chief Justice William Murray, 1st Earl of Mansfield. This identification is based on similarities to the portrait of the sitter and her sister, Lady Henrietta Finch, by Charles Jervas, also at Kenwood. The bust is a relatively early work by leading French sculptor Louis François Roubiliac. Though it does not display the marked Rococo style of his mature work, the restrained carving of the hair, made with a claw-tooth chisel, curls of hair at the neck and the ‘wet-look’ drapery are all consistent with Roubiliac’s works of this period. The bust was in the Mansfield family collection until it was sold at the 1922 Kenwood House sale.
