This species is locally common in Northern Europe as well as in Scotland. It is a medium to large fungus with a cap measuring 6-12cms across. It has no distinctive odour when fresh but is inedible and probably quite poisonous. It grows singly or in small groups, preferring soil below conifers, often in moorland areas.
