Most of the canvas covered with complex machinery. Behind the machines are cream-coloured walls and leaded windows. One man stands in the centre surrounded and half obscured by the machines. To the right another man sits leaning forward with his head turned up to the right. In the left-hand corner in the immediate foreground another man holds a bundle of punched 'laths' (jacquard cards) painted in fairly bold impasto (perhaps) with muted colours.
