Although the painting is entitled ‘Kilnsey Crag’ the largest part of the picture is taken up with a depiction of the cloud filled sky.

Writing in an edition of the ‘Artist’ magazine in 1933, Priestman considered the problem of painting clouds;

‘Clouds of the cumulus order have considerable atmospheric substance, although often appearing in the distance rather map like. You will see the light and shade on the nearer ones, which show their actual forms if you are painting with the light shining on the clouds. If the sun is shining behind the clouds, the edges are the brightest part, the mass being thrown into shadow.’
