Julius Drewe was the third son of the Reverend George Smith Drew and Mary Peek, joint founder of the Home and Colonial Stores, and the builder of Castle Drogo with his architect, Edwin Lutyens. He is pictured standing at Faskally, on the river Tummel, Perthshire. He is dressed for fishing in his favourite Burberry and is holding a book of fishing flies. The 39lb salmon, which he caught in 1900, is behind him. This fish is still preserved in the Castle today and is on view.

Although the artist was known for his pictures of Scottish life, which often have a strong narrative element, he also produced portraits and painted three of the Drewe family.
