Desseignet taught French at the University of Aberdeen from 1911–1920. In November 1920 he was appointed Professor of French at University College, Reading (then an extension college of Christchurch College, Oxford). This transformed into a full university chair of French Language and Literature when the College received its Royal Charter as the University of Reading in 1926. A biography is attached to the Art Detective discussion on this portrait.
