This is a sitting portrait of Judge John Francis Taylor, a benefactor and Governor of the Company of Merchant Adventurers from 1857–1859 and again in 1872–1874.

He wears Governors’ robes with a dark suit underneath, over a white shirt. A large gold signet ring is worn on the little finger of his left hand, and a pair of gold pince-nez are held in his right hand.

Judge John Francis Taylor paid for substantial repairs to the Merchant Adventurers’ Hall and purchased a handsome gold signet ring displaying the corporate arms which had been lost from the Company’s possession.
