He became a Member of the Company in 1742 and Sheriff of York in 1763. When he died in 1775, he was buried in St Helen’s Church, Stonegate, York, where there is a monument to him. In the burial record he was described as 'the most eminent silk mercer in York'.
This is one of a pair of portraits which depict John Stow and his wife Catherine separately.
