The sitter was born on 21st September 1822 in Insch and died on 29th September 1898 in Inverurie. James Skinner married Agnes Niven in 1850 and had 10 children. One of whom David, became a Doctor in rural Victoria, Australia. James was a silk merchant and draper in Inverurie and lived at Westfield house. His son James took over the family business and was also Provost of Inverurie for a time.
