John Sherwen was a surgeon apothecary active in Enfield (Middlesex) and Bath. He was also a book collector and writer on literary matters including the poems written by Thomas Chatterton under the name of Thomas Rowley, which Sherwen thought were medieval. The portrait was probably painted in Bath, where John Hammond Jones practised as a painter.
