According to the sitter’s obituary, he was presented with a gold hunting watch and Albert chain at the annual meeting of the Bolton Licensed Victuallers' Protection and Benevolent Society on 6th August 1867, for his 13 years service as president. There was money left over, so Bolton artist David Winder was commissioned to paint Brandwood's portrait, which was presented to him by Charles Seddon in 1867.
