Robert Duddingstone Hermand was made a member of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1908. He painted a number of portraits of children and scenes depicting children at play, including one of his best known paintings, ‘The Joy of Summer’. He often painted romantic scenes inspired by literature and poetry.

This more formal composition of an unknown sitter idealises the beauty and innocence of the young girl with subtle use of colour and tone that creates an almost dream like representation. Very little is known regarding Hermand’s work in other collections.
