Jemadar (a junior rank of Indian officers) Jangia Thapa was one of Lord Roberts's orderlies during the Second Afghan War (1878–1880). He was nicknamed 'Bullets' because regimental tradition had it that he had once been hit on the forehead by a bullet which had been completely flattened without causing him the least discomfort.

Thapa was wounded when serving with the Hunza and Nagar Field Force on the North-West Frontier in 1891. He was admitted to the Second Class of the Order of British India in April 1897 and was selected as one of the representatives for India at the inauguration of the Australian Commonwealth in January 1901. On his retirement in 1904 he was granted the honorary rank of subadar-major, the highest rank that an Indian officer could then hold.
