This portrait shows the archaeologist, author, film-maker, broadcaster and peace campaigner Jacquetta Hawkes. She is sitting at her desk, wearing a blue dress; her right profile is shown.

Jacquetta Hawkes was the wife of the author J. B. Priestley, whose portrait is shown on the wall behind her. She was also a Trustee of the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust. Priestley said of her: 'What a woman! Ice without, fire within.'
