The sitter was the second daughter of Charles, 2nd Earl of Carnarvon (of that family) by Elizabeth, daughter of Arthur, Lord Capel. She married the 4th Earl of Mountrath and was the grandmother-in-law of Diana, youngest daughter of Richard, 2nd Earl of Bradford and Mary Wilbraham. Diana married in 1721 Algernon Coote the 6th Earl of Mountrath. Their only son Charles Henry, afterwards 7th Earl of Mountrath, died unmarried. Lady Diana Mountrath (1 April 1724–14 July 1766) was the aunt of Sir Henry Bridgeman, who was created Baron Bradford in 1794. She is mentioned to indicate how the portrait came into the Weston Collection.
