Painted in 1901 the view is from Shore Street Quay towards the town. Inverness had been an important port trading with the Mediterranean and the east since medieval times. Despite the coming of the railways, heavier goods still came in by sea and Shore Street Quay was developed to allow the docking of boats bringing coal.
A steam train is crossing the railway bridge over the River Ness. The bridge was built in 1862 by Joseph Mitchell for the Inverness and Ross-shire Railway. It was swept away after three days of torrential rain in February 1989. The spires of the Old High Church and the Free North Church can be seen in the distance.
