The artist says about this work: 'It depicts a large glass window in an airport 'in transit' lounge (Newark Airport, New Jersey, December 1998) which compresses several 'realities' or situations into one image. The vertical division and the diamond shapes are reflections from the 'political space' of the airport lounge. Splashes and drips show the glass window – rain and sleet are falling – as a tangible but transparent division or barrier. This barrier keeps travellers 'out of the USA', but also safe from the storm (nature), and from the icy apron with planes and equipment on it (security risks and liability). The row of bright spots across the lower painting represent lights and the world beyond the airport itself where people are doing ordinary things at home or work.
