Intended to represent the engineering and industrial image of Birmingham, the rods are displayed at differing lengths and angles and under-lit at night to reflect their metallic surface. Forming a fan shape, they express, according to the artist, the 'Impulsive, most modern city in Europe, thrusting forward, upward... its ringways, over and underpasses, the Bull Ring etc.'. Commissioned as part of the Five Ways road development scheme.
