An abstracted final study of Balzac's head, with hair swept back on the left, and flowing long on the right, one stray piece over his forehead, sunken eyes and extended lips. The head is mounted on a square base of pink marble and was cast by the Alexis Rudier Foundry, Paris. It is one of a number of studies of Balzac undertaken by Rodin between 1891 and 1898 while producing his commission for a public monument to the writer, commissioned by the Société des Gens de Lettres.

The house and contents of Shaw's Corner were bequeathed to the National Trust by George Bernard Shaw in 1950, together with Shaw's photographic archive.
