A stylised view of Hillmorton locks, looking down from the left side of the river bank across the water. Painted using sharp, diagonal brushstrokes (especially in the sky region) this style is also mimicked on the grassy verge and the river. The view is slightly obscured by the grasses and stone wall along the bank, and both locks are closed. The roof of the lock-keeper's cottage is visible in the background amongst the trees. The colours used are naturalistic, and the grey tones of the river are a result of the overcast sky which features heavy, black clouds.
