In a letter from the artist dated November 1993, Atkins wrote that ''Green Gorse' was painted on returning from an extremely hot week in Andalucia and was partly a response to my surprise at the greenness of my garden ... And the gorse bush (was) mingled with memories of a visit to the remarkable architecture of the Moorish palaces at the Alhambra in Granada.'
