Travelling by steamer on the River Clyde was a popular way to travel, particularly for Glaswegians going on holiday. The railway line was extended to Gourock in 1889, providing an easy connection service onto onward steamer ships. This scene shows a bustling Gourock Pier as people arrive and depart on ships, such as ‘Mercury’, ‘Duchess of Rothesay’, ‘Queen Empress’ and ‘Kenilworth’. These Clyde steamers would take passengers ‘doon the watter’ to destinations, such as Kilcreggan, Dunoon, Rothesay and Arran.

Wyllie frequently painted during trips to the Clyde, with steamers and destination ports being his favourite subject.
