Spiro uses soft brushstrokes and organic shapes to frame the gentle beauty of his girl with a rose. His early portraits of women appeared frequently (often as cover images), in the magazine of the Jugendstil (or Art Nouveau movement) in Germany. Spiro was born to a German-Jewish family in 1874, and studied art in Breslau and Munich before relocating to Paris to study the French masters. He became a Professor at the Académie Moderne and co-founded the Salon d’Automne. Spiro returned to Berlin in 1914 and was appointed Chairman of the progressive Secession group and Professor at the Academy of Arts. Following Hitler’s rise to power, he fled to Paris in 1935, co-founding, co-directing and chairing the Union des Artistes Libres. Forced to flee again in 1940, he settled in the USA, travelling via Spain and Portugal.
