This painting is a copy of Charles Wilson Peale's image, dated 1772, which shows George Washington in British military uniform as Colonel Commander of the Virginian colonial troops. The picture was a 1915 gift from the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America and is an early example of their continuing support for Sulgrave Manor.
