Sulgrave Manor is the birthplace to George Washington's ancestors. It is this direct link between George Washington, first President of the United States of America, and his ancestor, Lawrence Washington, builder of Sulgrave Manor, that defines the Manor's claim to fame today. Built in the sixteenth century with alterations and additions in the eighteenth and twentieth centuries, the Manor has experienced changes of shape and size, condition and status over nearly five centuries. It has emerged with a unique status now as an enduring symbol of a special Anglo-American relationship. Change continues as, in the twenty-first century, we develop new and different ways to make Sulgrave Manor's past, its buildings, its people, and the lifestyle they made here, relevant today. Each year these stories are shared with more than 20,000 visitors of all ages who come to discover The Sulgrave Manor Experience.
