The statue was originally in Broad Street and only later moved to Palmer Park. It depicts Palmer, standing, with top hat and umbrella clasped in his right hand, while his left hand holds his lapel. (It was reputedly the first statue in Britain to feature an umbrella!) Palmer was a Quaker baker, and with Thomas Huntley formed the biscuit firm, Huntley and Palmer.
