After 60 years as bandmaster, the sitter's friends and admirers clubbed together to commission this portrait. Livesay is credited with ensuring the band played to the very highest standards and performed unusual and modern pieces that gave it an international reputation.

The Harris family owned a portrait studio in Merthyr Tydfil during the late nineteenth century. George later moved to Cardiff and opened a studio in Queen Street. After World War One he and his family emigrated to Australia. The Museum is fortunate enough to have a number of George Frederick Harris paintings as well as a painting by his grandson, Rolf Harris.
