This informal portrait shows Mr George Hayes pictured at Kellingley Colliery. Little is known about the artist of this portrait, except that he was a miner working under Hayes at the time of its completion. Though the style of this portrait suggests that the artist was an unschooled amateur, its importance lies not in its technique, but in the artist’s representation of George Hayes. George Hayes spent his life in the Yorkshire coalfields working at a variety of mines, including Bentley, Bullcroft, Brodsworth, Hatfield and Kellingley before becoming the National Coal Board’s Deputy Director for North Yorkshire and later Area Director for South Yorkshire. His services to the industry were officially recognised when he was awarded the OBE.
