The pedestal is generously splayed towards the base and rests on steps. Its upper corners are adorned with Grecian acroteria. There are polished benches at the front and to the side of the memorial. The marble for the plinth was to be a gift from the Greek government but its arrival was delayed. A temporary plinth was in place until it was finally replaced on on 22nd April 1882.
