Dr Fearnley was born in Ecclesfield, Sheffield and moved to Dewsbury at a young age. As a young man he was first apprenticed to a Wakefield apothecary. In 1835 he went to Edinburgh to study medicine and later that year also obtained his MRCS in London and became a licentiate of the Apothecaries' Hall. In 1836 he obtained the degree of Doctor of Medicine in Heidelberg. He also had an eye for business, since in 1851 he purchased a large piece of land from the London and North Western Railway Company, which he sold on to great advantage. In 1862 he was unanimously elected Mayor of Dewsbury. At the time of his death he was also Honorary Surgeon of the Dewsbury Rifle Corps. An eminent Freemason, he held roles as Deputy Provincial Grand Master of West Yorkshire and Senior Grand Deacon of England.
