Composer and conductor Frederick Delius is depicted blind and almost completely paralysed at the age of 67 years old, seated in a wheelchair with blanket on his lap, listening to his own composition, 'A Mass of Life' from the circle of the Queen's Hall, London. A Bradford-born composer of choral and orchestral works, Delius's success was established in Germany before his merits were recognised, largely due to Sir Thomas Beecham, in Britain. For this portrait Proctor sketched the artist listening to a rehearsal for the Delius festival held at the Queen's Hall organised by Beecham held on 12th, 18th and 26th October and 1st November 1929. Delius's wife Jelka and his amanuensis Eric Fenby brought the composer from his home at Grez-sur-Loing, near Paris, and the party stayed at the Langham Hotel near the Queen's Hall. After the Festival, Delius returned to France where he died five years later. He was buried at Limpsfield in Surrey.
