The painting was exhibited at the Leicester Galleries in 1929 and sold from there to Alexander Park Lyle of Albany (letter from Mrs P. M. Procter 15th January 1974). Other letters indicate it was in the possession of the Gardiner family. The 807th Royal Albert Hall Council minutes (16th November 1938) report that; 'Sir Archibald Lyle offered to present to the Council a picture of Delius in a wheeled chair in the Royal Albert Hall listening to one of his works. It was resolved – That the picture be accepted with grateful thanks to Sir Archibald Lyle for his very generous offer.' After its donation to the Hall, the Council Minutes for October 1977 suggest it should be hung in Door 6. In January 1978 Sir Hugh Casson, the designer responsible for the centenary redecoration of the Royal Albert Hall, suggested that the National Portrait Gallery might offer advice on the painting. In March, the then Director of the Gallery recognised it as the missing Procter work, and suggested it should not be under glass and therefore needed varnishing. It was subsequently restretched or relined later that year. Steve Race, a former Hall Council member, championed the work and in 1988 arranged for it to be hung in the Elgar Room. In 1989 the National Portrait Gallery requested the loan of the painting for an exhibition 'Looking to Construct - Delius by Procter'. On its return to the Hall the painting was put into storage until it was displayed in the amphi-corridor of the Royal Albert Hall from July–December 2012 as part of a display by The Delius Society.
