Francis Thomas Allen is shown in his mayoral robes. His pose, turned away from the viewer, one hand on his hip, the other casually resting on a book, is based on works by Rembrandt and Titian. Allen’s early career was as a barrister. He became a city councillor in 1848 and later became an alderman. He served as Mayor from 1852 to 1853.
