Avery was born in South Molton, Devon, in 1926. He studied painting with James Salmon (later Principal of Croydon College of Art) at St Paul’s College, Cheltenham. Avery’s interest in Modern painting was affirmed by a meeting with the artist Paul Nash, who encouraged him to look to Paris rather than London or New York for the influences which would subsequently shape his work. His ashes were scattered at Fountains Abbey, North Yorkshire.
