The fountain consists of three principal marble groups arranged in line, with three subsidiary marble figures disposed in a triangle in front and a similar arrangement behind. In the centre, Pluto and Proserpina are placed on a large inverted shell, set on a rock work base. The horned and bearded Pluto seizes Proserpina round the waist. The figures are naked save for a swirl of drapery behind and a strand of ivy which clings to the right thigh of Proserpina. Flanking the central group and facing away from it are two infant tritons, with pointed ears and with flowers in their hair, riding hippocamps. They raise respectively the left and the right arm. In front are three tritons holding conches. Behind are a triton and a nereid and, in the centre, a sea monster with a fish head.
