This painting depicts Roman soldiers at the foot of the cross casting lots for Christ's robe. The painting illustrates a scene from the gospels and the citation in the title corresponds most closely to the Gospel According to Saint John, chapter 20, verse 24, 'Let us not rend it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be: that the scripture might be fulfilled which saith, They parted my raiment among them, and for my vesture they did cast lots…' The figure of Saint John himself can be seen to the left of the soldiers alongside the Virgin Mary and Mary Magdalen.
