David Bomberg's work had been rejected by the War Artists' Advisory Committee and, in an attempt to divert him from the disappointment, his wife suggested he paint some flowers. Surrounded by war-ravaged London he was able to paint a series of exuberant canvases celebrating the beauty and vigour of flowers bursting forth from their vases. When he exhibited them a reviewer remarked 'these are veritable explosions in oil colours'.
