A small boy, Herbert Copeland (aged 3 years and 3 months) stands next to his father who is seated to the right of the composition. James Copeland was aged 51 at the time of the work and was a china toy manufacturer based in New Street, Hanley. Both are dressed in expensive clothes and James holds a book in his right hand.
