This standing figure of Sir Claude Auchinleck in a relaxed pose, is the only known statue of Auchinleck. The portrait's facial features have been rendered naturalistically, while the broad surfaces of the body are treated in an impressionistic manner. It is believed that Auchinleck sat for a bust, and the rest of the statue was created from photographs.

The sculpture was commissioned and paid for by the Murrayfield Real Estate Company Ltd., the developers of Five Ways Shopping Centre. The Field Marshall, a distinguished officer in the First and Second World Wars, had been the chairman of Murrayfield's since 1958. It was the idea of the Managing Director, who had served under Auchinleck in the desert war, to erect the statue and name the piazza after him.
