This is one of 262 drawings and two paintings presented to the Museum by the artist's family in 2012, and related to John Kingsley Cook's wartime service in the merchant navy between December 1940 and August 1945. This was drawn while Cook was in captivity in Algeria, between October 1941 and November 1942. He and his fellow survivors spent their first weeks of captivity in Bône (Bone), before being transferred to the camp of Méchéria (Mecheria), in the Atlas mountains, in January 1942. Sketch of street scene with horse and possibly circus entertainers. Painted on a piece of canvas glued to the back of a print pasted on board.
