In the Low Countries in 1874 Farquharson studied the work of painters both past and present and he then spent several winters in the early 1880s working in the studio of Carolus-Duran in Paris. By the time of his visit to Egypt in the winter of 1885–1886 he was regularly painting and sketching en plein air. This study was put to use in the background of the large oil painting of Biblical shepherds with their flocks, ‘He drove them wandering o’er the Sandy Way’, exhibited in London at the Royal Academy in 1891.
