Two children stand before a textile mill in which they would have worked long hours. Their faces are blue from inadequate exercise, nutrition and light, for although the print shows them outside their factory in day time, the children would probably have only seen the outside world on Sundays. Walker describes the figures: 'This little blue dirty group in the plate are painted in their true colours; where in their complexions would the painter discover the blooming carnations of youth, or the valetudinarian, in the surrounding scenery, the pure air necessary for health?'. Engraved by Robert Havell (1769–1832), this print appeared in 'The Costumes of Yorkshire', published by Robinson and Sons of Leeds as plate 36. The publication first appeared as ten parts issued 1813–1814, and as a single volume shortly afterwards.
