Eugenie Strong (née Sellers) was a classical archaeologist and art historian. She went to Girton College in 1879 to read for the Classical Tripos, the taught course in classics at the Faculty of Classics, University of Cambridge. On leaving Girton she taught in London, then spent time studying and working at the British School at Athens and in Germany. In 1897, she married Sandford Arthur Strong (1863–1904), an orientalist, art historian and librarian. In 1909 she was appointed the Assistant Director of the British School at Rome and spent the rest of her life living in Rome. She was elected Girton's first Research Fellow in 1910 and was also a Life Fellow of the College. She was awarded many honours including a CBE in 1927 and, in 1938, the Serena gold medal for Italian studies by the British Academy.
