Dating from 1859, the document in the sitter's hand is fully titled 'A Scheme for a Board of Guardians for the Relief of the Necessitous Foreign Poor.' Alex's exertions led directly to the founding of the Jewish Board of Guardians in London in 1859, of which he was first President, his term running until 1869. The portrait was commissioned in December 1869 to acknowledge his retirement from that role. It would have been completed and presented in 1870.
