The collection of five portraits was transferred in 1978 to English Heritage by descendants of the Cadogan and Ames family of Brinkburn Priory. The Manor House where they once hung is no longer furnished, and all the Ames portraits are in store.
A label on the back attributes the picture to George Chambers, but this attribution is not secure: Elizabeth Ames died in 1868, aged 33, suggesting this portrait was painted c.1865, after Chambers' death. Chambers is best known for marine paintings.
