Like many of the artists who came to Jersey in Victorian times to paint the landscape, Wolfe has chosen Elizabeth Castle as the basis of his composition. To compose this picture the artist has arranged different elements, such as the castle in the background and the boat close to us, to create a pleasing effect. The causeway makes a visual link between the two, and the figures would have been carefully arranged to create balance and interest.
