The sitter is (Grace) Elizabeth Rothwell, who later married the artist William Dring. Many of Dring's figure paintings and drawings of a woman from the late 1920s and through the 1930s depict Elizabeth. They had met at the Slade where they were both students. Elizabeth exhibited four works herself at the New English Art Club between 1928 and 1930.
